March Update

10 Mar 2019

As the days are getting longer and we are now officially in Spring! the thought of sailing in warm sunshine at Bewl will soon be a reality, I hope...

The Bewl Blaster on 24th February had to be cancelled due to no wind. We only had a maximum of about 2-3 knots all morning, compared to last weekend's 35+ knots. This is a great shame, for all the hard work in preparation for the event by the race management team led by Keith goes to waste. However, it was good practice getting the water taxi ready as our committee boat for our next open with the Flying Fifteens later this month.

Flying Fifteen Open - 23rd / 24th March

BSA is very proud to hold one of the Southern Area Travellers events this year at Bewl; with 5 races in total over the weekend and a social on the Saturday evening it promises to be a great event. Attached is the Notice of Race (NOR) for the event with details and, if you fancy crewing, please email  Charlie.

Bring a Dish & Share Supper - 6th April @ 7:30pm

Mo from the MidWeekers is organising an evening get-together at Bewl. There is a long history of these evenings being great fun and a chance to catch up with old sailing pals and make plans for the coming sailing season. If you're thinking of attending please email Mo.

Push the Boat Out Day - 18th May

This year's have-a-go day will be on 18th May so, if you know anyone who is thinking about taking up sailing, this is the perfect opportunity or, if you are willing to help out, watch this space or email Richard.

Howard Mackenzie – Bewl Water Estates Manager

For those who don’t know, Howard is due to retire this month. He has worked at Bewl Water for 35 years and knows the whole place inside out. He started out as a Ranger and over the years was promoted by Southern Water until he became the Manager of this wonderful facility. He has never been a man to shout about all that he does to keep the whole place ticking over or the battles that he has thankfully won to protect the beauty of the site.

Ever since BSA was formed, and for the years before that, Howard has been extremely supportive in helping out with any issue we had on the site. In short he is ‘Mr Bewl Water’ and we owe him a lot and if you would like to donate towards a retirement gift from the sailors at Bewl please click on this link .

AGM / Fitting Out Lunch

Unfortunately due to a work commitment I'm going to have to postpone the AGM from 17th March to late April and try to combine it with a fitting out lunch after Sunday racing. Watch out for more information on this soon.

We have a couple of vacancies on the BSA committee this year: Rear Commodore Services and Vice Commodore. If you are willing to take on one of these roles please email  Mark.

Support Boat Wednesday Evenings & Saturday Afternoons

Following a successful trial in 2018, BSA intends to have a patrol boat out on the water from April to early September. The Pop-Up Cafe will also be open to act as a focal point for social sailing. So far we have 4 volunteers but we need more to make this work, so if you are willing to help either as a helm or crew, please email Mark.

Annual FAB (Fun At Bewl) Camping & Caravanning Week - 27th July - 3rd August

A week of fun on and off the water; 2 sessions daily with safety boat cover and evening activities as well - great for all ages. All Bewl sailors welcome to join in and as usual we hope we will get some volunteers to man the safety boat even if you are not camping with us. If you're thinking of attending please email  Mo.

Summer Regatta - 4th August

This is the second year we will be holding the Summer Regatta with an emphasis on the fun and informal side of racing. There will be various starts from youth and new-to-racing to one for the old hands. So if you're thinking of attending the FAB week, this could be the perfect event to round off the week. More details to follow next month or email  Mark.

British Keelboat League

Last year was the first year BSA entered a team for the league and it was great fun. Have a look at the website if you are thinking of being a part of this year's team and email  Mark.

Sunday Racing

Sunday racing continues with more boats coming on the water as the weather improves. You will find the race calendar here . So if you fancy having a go just pop down on a Sunday morning and have a chat with the regular racers to see what it's all about.

Thanks. All for now, great sailing!
